Letter to Clifford C. Waters of Boston (Mass.) is addressed from Cedar Grove Plantation (Beaufort District, S.C.) and signed by "Shepard," who writes of a time of "great excitement and commotion for the residents of this island" due in part to the arrival of troops of the Army of Tennessee. Letter also concerns cotton sales, an encounter with several "contrabands" (fugitive slaves), a pontoon bridge thrown up by General Sherman's troops, movements of Confederate forces, and other matters.
