The Papers document Evans's interest in gathering information on the lifestyles of older gay men from the 1920s to the early 1970s. Of importance is the oral histories of gays and lesbians describing life in the 1950s and the impact of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist witch hunts. Includes interviews with Betty Deran, Ted Roffs, Tom Redmon, Rusty Brown, Jack Leister, Samuel M. Steward, and Madeleine Tress. also some material on the Daughters of Bilitis.

Samuel M. Steward published under his own name and the name Phil Andros, and worked as a tattooist under the name Phil Sparrow. Samuel M. Steward earned his PhD in writing from Ohio State University, and taught at several colleges and universities. After leaving academia in the mid-1950's, Mr. Steward continued his professions as tattoo artist and as writer. Steward died at age 84 on December 31, 1993 in Berkeley, California.
