William Blackmore collection, 1827-1890.

Collection consists of a broad range of materials collected and created by Blackmore, including diaries, notebooks, letters sent and received, newspaper clippings, pamphlets and other publications. Among the letters are several sent by George Catlin, and a series of correspondence between Blackmore and Charles D. Poston. Much of the materials in this collection involve topics such as land speculation, railroads, and mining in New Mexico, with documents concerning the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in particular. The collection also includes a handwritten manuscript and a typed draft of Richard Irving Dodge's "The Hunting Grounds of the Great West;" notes and measurements taken by Blackmore of the Indian Serpent Mound in southern Ohio in 1871; and an 1824 letter by William Penn, great-grandson of the William Penn who founded Pennsylvania, seeking funds to insure his release from debtor's prison.
