Lansing B. Bloom collection, 1551-1940.

Collection consists primarily of photostats and photocopies of a broad range of historical documents, reports, and publications from the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain, and Biblioteca Nacional in Mexico City, as well as Bloom's correspondence regarding the acquisition of these materials. Includes a photocopy and English translation of a 1603 report on the activities of Fray Alonso Benavides in New Mexico. Collection also contains research notes and index cards on individual Franciscan missionaries in New Mexico, copied at the Biblioteca Comunale dell 'Archiginnasio in Bologna, Italy. Also within the collection are the 1928 research notes of Dr. S.H. Bemis from his work with facsimiles of Spanish archives at the Library of Congress; and Bloom's Spanish visa records from 1938-39.

Lansing B. Bloom, a Presbyterian minister, came to New Mexico in 1912 and worked at several missions, before accepting a staff position with the Museum of New Mexico and School of American Research in Santa Fe, in 1917. In 1924, Bloom became a fellow of the Historical Society of New Mexico, where he held the position of secretary until his death in 1946.
