Collection of commemorative items, clippings, and other materials, including editorial, 17 June 1909, The Daily Record (Columbia, S.C.), re controversy surrounding the state of South Carolina's assuming control of the college, with estimates of monetary value of bequest left by benefactor Thomas Clemson; written in response to letter from Col. R[ichard] W. Simpson, executor of Clemson's will. Collection includes undated photostatic copy [ca. 1957?] of clipping, "Octavus Cohen Among Clemson Cadets Who Walked Out in 1908," re account of April fool's Day "revolt," including list of 305 cadets who participated in the walkout and who signed affidavit stating that they would return home in case of dismissal by the college. Impact of World War II on the college community is reflected in clipping, ca. 1942, re alumni killed or missing in action, and AClemson Memorial Serivice, @ 7 Dec. 1945, program honoring and listing alumni lost during the war. Collection also includes salary roll, 1947-1948, (42 leaves) including letter, 26 June 1947, Clemson, S.C., from college president R[obert] F[ranklin] Poole to Gov. Strom Thurmond, identifying names and positions of all faculty and staff, listing salary, 1946-1947, and proposed salary for 1947-1948. Ephemera including programs for commencement ceremonies, 3-5 June 1928, and 6 May 1967; illustrated invitations, 12 May 1937, for dedication of Long Agricultural Hall; and program, 14 Oct. 1966 for dedication of Robert Muldrow Cooper Library.

Poole, Robert F. (Robert Franklin), 1893-1958

Robert Franklin Poole, 1893-1958 was a noted plant pathologist and president of Clemson College from 1940-1958. A 1916 graduate of Clemson College, Poole received his M.S. and Ph. D. in plant pathology from Rutgers University. Poole was appointed associate professor and plant pathologist at North Carolina College in 1926. As president of Clemson from 1940-1958, he oversaw the de-militarization of the campus, the admission of women, and major changes in the physical plant of the campus. ...
