The all woman unit of the American Legion was formed in October, 1919, by a group of ex-service women in Rochester, New York (primarily nurses) from Base Hospital No. 19 which was formed primarily from members of the staff of The Rochester General Hospital. Rochester General Hospital obtained its charter in 1847 as the Rochester City Hospital. The Hospital opened its doors in 1864 on West Main St. The name was changed to Rochester General in 1911.
