Scott Heywood collection, 1899-1969.

Business and personal correspondence from 1899 to the 1950's concerning Mr. Heywood's many business and political activities. Frequently referred to as the father of the Louisiana oil industry, W. Scott Heywood was also a state senator from Jennings. The collection also contains miscellaneous photographs, charts, and maps.

Heywood Brothers brought in Louisiana's first oil well in Jennings area in 1901. Before coming to Louisiana, Scott Heywood was a member of his brother Alba's Concert Company touring the U.S. and Canada. Heywood traveled to the Yukon where he was a gold miner. He was involved in the oil business in California. After settling in Louisiana, he became involved in civic affairs and politics, serving as state senator from 1932-1936.
