Warner papers, 1853-1888.

Consists of two items; a 39 pp. handwritten text of talk prepared for the California Historical Society in 1888 concerning early trapping parties in California and a photocopy of a 1 page letter to Maj. Samuel P. Heintzelman concerning constructing a good wagon road from San Diego to the Gila River. The talk tells about the people, life on the trail and in camp of various trapping parties of which Warner was a member.

Heintzelman was born in Manheim, Pennsylvania, to Peter and Ann Elizabeth Grubb Heintzelman. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1826 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Infantry, July 1, 1826, then in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served on the Northern frontier at Fort Gratiot, Fort Mackinac, and Fort Brady.
