Emanuel Frederick Poppen Papers, 1930-1949.

Emanuel Frederick Poppen was serving as first vice president of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) when Carl Christian Hein, the ALC's president, died in 1937. During Hein's illness, Poppen assisted with or took over some of the duties previously assigned to the president. For these reasons, some correspondence addressed to Hein has been interfiled with the Poppen papers. This explains why some of the materials in this series begin as early as 1930. Folders are grouped generally by subject, with documents of the following subject areas being boxed together in the order listed: merger and changes to the constitution; ALC boards. Committees, councils and commissions; ALC organizations; ALC districts; ALC conventions; educational institutions; charitable institutions; Liturgy and Hymnal Commissions; other Lutheran church bodies (including predecessor bodies to the ALC); inter-Lutheran and ecumenical organizations; military services; letters to pastors and pastoral salaries; archivist and archives; appeals to the ALC and announcements; ALC: office matters; Dr. Emmanuel Poppen: addresses and writings; and general correspondence.
