Benjamin Brown French was assistant clerk in the United States House of Representatives from 1826 to 1845 when he was promoted to Clerk during the 29th Congress. He subsequently served as U.S. Commissioner of Public Buildings. His interests included poetry and he was an enthusiastic Freemason.
