The Department of Lutheran World Service correspondence files (1955-1965) contain correspondence, memoranda, and reports regarding the Department's efforts in recommending allocations for projects of the Lutheran World Federation's (LWF) Department of World Service program. Files concern LWF supported relief, resettlement, and reconstruction activities in countries around the world; and support for international and national church and student organization programs. Correspondents include NLC, Division, and Department officials, LWF and Department of World Service officials, LWF representatives in countries from around the world. International and national church and student organization leaders, and U.S. Lutheran pastors and lay persons. Notable correspondents include Department of Lutheran World Service Secretary Bernard A. Confer; National Lutheran Council Executive Director Paul C. Empie; Division of Lutheran World Federation Affairs Executive Secretary Stewart W. Herman, Jr.; LWF General Secretary Carl E. Lund-Quist; and LWF- Department of World Service Directors Bengt Hoffman and Bruno Muetzelfeldt. It is unclear as to why files from 1959-1960 are missing from the series.
