Broadsides, stock certificates and printed ephemera dating to antebellum and Reconstruction periods, including printed regulations, ca. 1840, re maintenance of stations, supplying of wood and water, and payment of overseers. Broadside, 13 Feb. 1845, re U.S. Senate Bill S.127 authorizing the Company to import certain pipes and machinery duty free "for the application of the atmospheric pressure, as a propellig power on railroads, not to exceed what is sufficient for a road one mile in length" Circular letter, 6 Sept. 1848, signed by W[illia]m H. Bartless, re settlement of insurance claims for goods from ship John Castner, damaged by fire and water in Charleston harbor. Collection also includes plat, 5 Jan. 1849, Colleton District, S.C., survey of 569 acres by Thomas I. Millard, "Pursuant to request of Col. James Gadsden, President" of the company, re land located between the Four Holes and Cypress Swamps, listing adjoining landowners, and noting that the tract descended from a grant to Capt. Tobias Fitch in 1731. Stock certificate, 15 Feb. 1860, Charleston, for shares issued to Miss Martha E. McCall; newspaper clipping, 26 July 1854, listing "Rules and Stipulations" for passengers; and undated broadside, "Regulations of Stations on South Carolina Rail Road." Also includes labor agreement, 15 June 1864, between Ja[me]s Trumble, agent for the company, and T.J. Withers, for hire of Thomas, an African American slave, age 22 years; booklet, 1864, "Schedule for Running of Trains effective 1 Dec. 1864, Until Further Notice" (8 pages). Reconstruction era materials include S.C. legislative bill, ca. 8 and 15 Dec. 1865, signed by James Hemphill, re permission to redeem state bonds issued in 1837; Supplemenet to Charleston News, "To the stockholders of the S.C.R.R. Company," 27 Feb. 1869 (6 p., 61 x 46 cm), re legal battle between South Carolina Rail Road and the Columbia and Augusta Rail Road. Also includes printed sheets of tickets, 1 July 1873, in various denominations; each ticket specifying number of fares and miles allowed; illustrated with various views of locomotives, and draymen loading cotton.
