John Montgomery was born in Spokane, Washington on May 2, 1919. He received a B.S. in Economics (1940) from the University of California, Berkeley followed by an M.A. in Library Science (1958) from George Peabody College for Teachers in Tennessee, and an M.A. in Creative Writing (1964) from San Francisco State College.
