John G. Taylor letter : 1830.

Single item collection consisting of a deposition given by John G. Taylor to Simeon S. Goodwin, Notary Public for Jefferson County, Kentucky. The document is dated April 9, 1834. The deposition was taken because of a dispute between Taylor and the Merchant Insurance Company. Taylor owned a keelboat, the Virgil, and filled it with supplies to be sold along river routes. After he completed the lading, he contacted William S. Vernon, secretary of the insurance company, about obtaining insurance for the boat and cargo. Taylor was able to obtain the insurance so the boat set sail. During the trip, the boat sank and the cargo was lost. When Taylor made a claim, the company said he did not have insurance. Taylor, in making the diposition, was taking action against the company.
