John Webster Perit Huntington was born July 5, 1831 in Norwich, Connecticut and died June 3, 1869 at the age of 37. He sailed around Cape Horn in 1850, settling in Yoncalla, Umpqua (now Douglas) County, Oregon in 1852. He was elected to the state legislature in 1860 and appointed Oregon's Superintendent of Indian Affairs in 1863. Edward R. Geary, pioneer missionary and educator, was born in Boonsboro, Maryland on April 30, 1811. He arrived in Oregon in 1851 as a Presbyterian missionary, preaching at Brownsville, Pleasant Grove and Albany, before settling in Eugene in 1875. In 1866, Geary co-founded Albany College, and in 1876 became a regent of the University of Oregon. He served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon and Washington Territory from1859-1861. John W. Geary was a lawyer, politician and Union general in the Civil War (1861-1865). He was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania on 30 December 1819. After serving as a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War (1846-1848), Geary went to California for the 1849 gold rush. While in California, Geary became the first governor of San Francisco from 1850 to 1851 and was later governor of the Kansas Territory from 1856-1857.
