Muster and descriptive rolls, ca. 1861-1865.

These volumes were compiled from original records by the Adjutant General as a quick reference file for all Illinois infantry, cavalry, and artillery units, and for the 29th Colored Infantry (Regular Army). Muster and descriptive rolls are arranged by arm of service and sequentially by regiment number. Roll entries include soldier's name; rank; age; height; colors of eyes, hair, and complexion; occupation; marital status; birthplace; residence; enrollment date, place and term; individual who enrolled soldier; muster in date and place; mustering officer name; muster out date and place; mustering-out officer name; and remarks concerning transfers, promotions, injuries, or special duty. Rosters of Illinois soldiers who served in the Civil War are published in Reports of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois, Containing Reports for the Years, 1861-66, rev. ed. (Springfield, 1900-1901).

The 29th Regiment U. S. Colored Troops was organized at Quincy, Illinois, April 24, 1864. The regiment reported to Alexandria, Virginia where they were attached to the defense of Washington D.
