Consists of the papers of Willis Stanley Blatchley, 1859-1940, Indiana state geologist and naturalist. Included are the papers written by Blatchley while he was an undergraduate at Indiana University, 1883-1887; some letters to him, June 29, 1889 - December 2, 1904; copies of letters written by him December 12, 1898 - November 6, 1939, most of them having been written while he was Indiana State Geologist; and miscellaneous papers written by him relating largely to the geology and natural science of Indiana.

Born in North Madison, Connecticut, he was brought by his parents to Hendricks County, Indiana, in 1860. In 1862 the family moved to Putnam County, Indiana, where Blatchley received his elementary education. He entered Indiana University in March 1883, where he majored in science (botany, zoology, and geology), and graduated in 1887. From 1887-1894 he taught science in Wiley High School of Terre Haute.
