ArchivalResource

Black Hawk War records, 1832-1891.

Files contain both original muster rolls of Illinois volunteers who served in the Black Hawk War and copies of muster rolls filed with the federal government. Copies of federal muster rolls were made pursuant to an 1881 General Assembly act which provided for record transcription. Original muster rolls are filed by brigade, while federal muster rolls are grouped by county. Muster roll entries include soldier name; rank; enrollment date and length; county of residence; payment amount due; and travel rations drawn. For mounted soldiers the rolls also give values and descriptions of arms, equipment, and horses issued. Files also contain correspondence concerning Black Hawk War veterans and their 1891 reunion.
