Letters from Rusticus, 1794.

Three letters signed "Rusticus" are attributed to Alexander Garden. They are addressed to "Gentlemen" and two are written from Saint Andrews Parish (S.C.). Letters concern the possible danger to the community from black slaves brought into South Carolina from Santo Domingo by their refugee masters. Letter (1794 Aug. 7) reports a rumor that there exists a society in Charleston (S.C.) known as "Les Amis des Noirs" and that the slaves have been urged to claim their freedom in view of a "decree of the National Convention of France for the abolition of slavery." Also included is an essay (contemporary, n.d.) in a different handwriting condemning the institution of slavery in the United States.
