Avery B. Cain letters, 1861-1865.

Civil war letters of Avery B. Cain of the U.S. 4th Infantry. A series of 43 letters from June 1, 1861 to April 5, 1865 from an officer in the regular army who started as a 2nd lieutenant and ended the war as a brevet major under Sykes. From Hampton, Va., the Monitor and Merrimac, he always praises McClellan, criticizes Sumner, describes 2nd Bull Run, and blames McDowell for its loss. The letters are written to his mother and father, in Rutland, Vt.
