Carmichael-Hangary correspondence, 1969-1972.

Correspondence between Carmichael in California and Clara Hangary in New Albany, Ind., regarding a 1911 photograph of the Constitution Elm in Corydon, Ind. Ms. Hangary owned the original photo; Carmichael saw a reproduction on the cover of the June 1969 INDIANA HISTORY BULLETIN. Carmichael wanted to paint a picture based on the image. He completed the painting and donated it to Indiana University.

Hoagy Carmichael was born in Bloomington, Indiana, November 22, 1899, the son of Howard Clyde and Lida Mary (Robinson) Carmichael. He earned a LLB from Indiana University in 1926, and married Ruth Mary Meinardi on March 14, 1936. He was the composer of many hit songs, namely Stardust (1927), and became the star of both his own radio program (Tonight at Hoagy's) and his own television show (Saturday Night Review).
