Papers of Walter Muir Whitehill, historian, author, and librarian of the Boston Athenaeum. 57 cartons contain records arranged in two alphabetical sequences, by institutional and individual name, according to Whitehill's own arrangement. Institutional files relate primarily to historical organizations (including the Mass. Historical Society and files for each agency described in Whitehill's "Independent Historical Societies"), libraries, and the publication of his numerous works. 13 cartons of unprocessed additions include Whitehill's journal (1959-67, 1970, 1976-77); transcribed diary of Edith L. Coolidge (1906-55); notes and correspondence with Admiral Ernest J. King; and writings by and about Ray Slater Blakeman, including diaries kept from 1956-70.
