John Mason Brown papers : letter, 1873.

Collection consists of a letter, written by John Mason Brown, to Samuel I.M. Major. The letter is a scathing critique of a newspaper article Major wrote in the Kentucky Yeoman, that used Brown's writings on the Magna Carta. Major editorialized the article and Brown's writings, which angered Brown. Brown's writings on the Magna Carta had previously appeared in Howard H. Gratz's Kentucky Gazette. The Yeoman was published in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Gazette was printed in Frankfort, but published in Lexington, Kentucky. The letter was written June 21, 1873.

John Mason Brown was born in Frankfort, Ky., 26 April 1837, the son of Mason and Mary (Yoder) Brown. He graduated from Yale College in 1856. He returned to Frankfort where he taught school and studied law. In April, 1860, he opened a law practice in St. Louis, Mo. He spent several months in 1861 and 1862 traveling in the Northwestern United States and British America. "The Screw" was published between 1847 and 1850 in Frankfort, Kentucky. The first issue was published in the neighboring city of Louisville. Two of the editors of the newspaper were Samuel I.M.
