George Herbert Sass papers, 1862-1941.

Papers consist of poems and other writings, correspondence, scrapbooks, legal documents, commonplace books, and other items. Writings include lectures and addresses, including an address on Arthur H. Clough; manuscripts of critical articles or essays on poets; and other essays and articles. Bound volumes (1862-1901) contain handwritten poems, essays, and other writings by G.H. Sass. Scattered correspondence includes letters (1864) concerning the assignment of G.H. Sass to Bureau duty at the Headquarters of the Dept. of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, C.S.A.; and correspondence with friends and others concerning literature, financial and legal matters, and other topics. Much correspondence pertains to the financial affairs of Anna R. Sass and family estate matters. Scrapbooks include a volume (1904-1906) containing clippings of reviews of "The Heart's Quest," a collection of verse by Sass; scrapbooks containing clippings of poems, addresses, and other writings by Sass; and a volume (originally used as a commonplace book) in which newspaper clippings on various subjects are pasted. A disbound scrapbook (1908) contains obituaries and memorials of G.H. Sass. Other items include receipts (1872-1901) for taxes, subscriptions, and other expenditures; professional certificates (1868) and a diploma; legal documents, including powers of attorney, a marriage certificate (1883), and two copies of the will (1891) of G.H. Sass; stock certificates; lists of securities; lists of books; and five commonplace books (ca. 1860s) probably belonging to a member of the Sass family.
