John Drayton papers, 1862-1869.

Papers consist of correspondence, including official military correspondence, other military records, a medical notebook, and other items. Military correspondence (1863) includes letters concerning Dr. John Drayton's medical services to slaves and other laborers working for the C.S.A. Corps of Engineers on James Island (S.C.); and correspondence of R.L. Singletary, Capt. William M. Ramsey, and others concerning Drayton's report of the misuse of rations at the commissary under the command of Capt. Ramsey. Other correspondence consists of letters (1868) to John Drayton in Texas from F.H. Trenholm and Clifford & Mathewes concerning Trenholm's lease of Drayton Hall and phosphate mining operations there. Medical notebook (1855) is inscribed "Note and Receipt Book for Various Medical Receipts and Observations taken by John Drayton." Entries about the treatment and progress of various illnesses are arranged alphabetically. Military records include Soldiers' Relief Fund applications (1862-1863) from Isaac N. Norwood and other members of the Wagner Light Artillery; lists (1863) of medicines and other supplies issued to Dr. John Drayton by the Confederate Medical Purveyor's Bureau; a charge (1863) of absent without leave for Victor Neely, Co. D, Palmetto Battalion of Light Artillery; and a travel pass (1865) for John Drayton. Other items include tax receipts (1865); a receipt (1866) for six horses issued to John Drayton in Fort Bend County, Texas by Thomas W. DeWalt; a "condensed report" (1868) of accounts for a phosphate mining lease at Drayton Hall; and a tax return (n.d.) for John Drayton's plantation in Saint Andrews Parish (S.C.) listing his slaves.

Physician. The son of Dr. Charles Drayton (1785-1844) and Mary Middleton Shoolbred (1794-1855), John Drayton was born in Charleston, S.C. He married Katie L. Leobnitz in New Orleans in 1893.
