Contains a letter discussing the military service of Samuel Goodwin Hawker, who served in the 29th Infantry Division, 821st Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. Includes brief descriptions of his patriarchal blessing that he received prior to entering the military, how it was fulfilled during the invasion of Omaha Beach on D-Day, which he survived unscathed. Also describes other narrow escapes from death; being wounded at Bourheim, Germany; eating raw meat during the Battle of the Bulge; the horrors of liberating the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp; and descriptions of post-traumatic stress disorder that he suffered until his death. Includes photographs of Hawker and a Dutch family during the war.
