Born in Burnley, Lancashire, England, son of Thomas Riding and Eleanor Lister. Early apprenticeship; marriage; conversion to Mormonism, 1840; passage by boat to St. Louis, Missouri, 1847; exodus west; arrival and settlement in Salt Lake City; marriage to plural wife Eliza Adelade Dolbell; move to Provo, Utah; removal to Santa Clara, Utah with his second wife, his first wife living in Cedar City, Utah; removal of both families to St. George.
