Born in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky, son of Culbert Means Leany and Margaret Cook. Family history and data; religious background; conversion to Mormonism, 1834; removal to Missouri in 1836; experience of his twin brother, Isaac, at the Haun's Mill massacre; experiences at Nauvoo, Illinois, after 1843; patriarchal blessing at Nauvoo; exodus west; arrival in Salt Lake Valley, 1847, and hardships encountered there; settlement of Parowan, Utah, 1851; cotton raising in southern Utah.
