Born in Lima, New York, son of john Porter Rollins and Kaziah Kature Van Benthwysen. Early life; work as a clerk for Algernon Sydney Gilbert in Kirtland, Ohio; conversion to Mormonism in 1832; life among the Mormons in Missouri and Illinois; mob activities; statement of the Prophet Joseph Smith rebuking the guards in the Richmond, Missouri jail; member of the Nauvoo Legion; exodus west; temporary settlement at Winter Quarters, Nebraska; arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, 1848; journey to California to look for gold, 1849; marriage to Hannah Humes, as a plural wife, 1851; second journey to California, 1851, where he became one of San Bernardino's first merchants; return to Utah at the coming of Johnston's Army; the first lead mine in Utah, at Parowan; service as biship of Parowan; settlement in Bridger Valley, Wyoming; family data.
