Early life; conversion to Mormonims, 1843; missionary labors in England; marriage to Ann Webster, 1844; death of his wife, 1850; opposition against the LDS Church in England; immigration to America, 1851; marriage to Mary Bateman, 1851; settlement at Fort Ephraim, Utah; death of his second wife, 1852; work as a government surveyor; Indian raids; marriage to Sarah Broadbridge, 1856; settlements in Manti and Monroe, Utah; mission to England; employee of Deseret News; marriage to Jane Blain as a plural wife. James Farmer was born in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, on June 12, 1825. He converted to Mormonism around 1843, when he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On January 7, 1849, he was ordained as an Elder in the LDS Church at Houseforth, Yorkshire.
