Born in Hancock County, Illinois, daughter of Oliver Thornton and Mary Griswald. Conversion of parents to Mormonism, 1839, in Upper Canada; movement of family to Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois; death of Joseph Smith; further moves to Nauvoo, Illinois, Lynn, Missouri, and Des Moines, Iowa; exodus west; arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, 1852; marriage to Stephen Mott, 1856; pioneer life.
