Born in Leeds County, Upper Canada, son of Stephen Chipman and Amanda Washburn. Early life in Upper Canada; conversion to Mormonism, 1836, with his family; successive moves with his parents to New York, Missouri, and Iowa Territory; exodus west, 1847; settlement at Mill Creek, Utah; journey to North Platte, Nebraska, to aid emigrants; call to help settle Iron County; settlement in American Fork, Utah; Walker War, 1853-1854; call to help settle Nephi, Utah; early organizer of Zion' Cooperative Mercantile Institution and of Provo Woolen Mills. (Part of the Adams Camp Collection, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.).
