Born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, son of John and Lydia Workman. Family's conversion to Mormonism in 1839 while living in Tennessee; settlement at Nauvoo, Illinois, 1843; exodus west; member of the Mormon Battalion, and march to California; work in the gold mines; arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, 1855; return trip to California; settlement in Kane County, Utah; death of his wife, Rebecca Deck; remarriage to Sariah A. Eager, 1866; organization of the United Order, 1874.
