Haunted theatres and the "curse of Macbeth", 2005.

Parker analyzes the ghost stories that abound in theatre culture, focusing especially on the "Curse of Macbeth," which requires theatre people to perform a ritual whenever someone says the unlucky word "Macbeth" on stage. Williams believes that drama people are very superstitious, despite their claims to the contrary. She suggests that theatre people disseminate ghost stories frequently because their theatrical hobby frequently requires them to believe in the unreal. Since many people join the theatre due to a dissatisfaction with humdrum reality and a desire for more, Parker believes that they crave the supernatural as a disruption of daily life. She finds that they tend to deny their superstitions in order to avoid more unpleasant stereotypes from being heaped on them. Parker concludes by applying Bascom's four functions of folklore to the theatre's culture of ghost stories.
