Joseph Kelly Nicholes was born October 10, 1887 in American Fork, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young University High School in 1908 before serving a mission to Denmark. He married Olive Maiben June 5, 1912. He obtained a bachelors degree in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics from Brigham Young University in 1916.
