Registers of prisoners, 1833-1975.

Registers record prisoners received at Alton (1833-1860) and Joliet/Stateville (1860-1975). Registers provide prisoner registration number and name; date received; aliases used; county where crime committed; crime description; sentence term; prisoner's plea, age, physical characteristics (e.g., height; complexion), birthplace, Illinois residency length, parent and martial information (i.e. , residence), religious affiliation, habits (e.g., drinking; smoking), and education; conviction court term; and disposition (e.g., discharge; parole; escape; sent to insane asylum; death). Additional data (October 1885- ) includes prisoner weight; occupation; former prison record; age left home; parents' birthplaces; children; prison work assignments; conduct records; and medical history. Prisoner's race; associates; hereditary diseases; heart and lung condition, correspondent addresses; and parole record are given (July 1895-). Naturalization status is provided (January 1914-). Past U.S. military service is also noted (July 1936-). A separate commutation section is provided (February 15, 1854 - September 27, 1878 ; September 14, 1881 - September 3, 1885) which shows commutation date; prisoner registration number and name; county with jurisdiction; original sentence length; commuted sentence length; and Governor granting commutation.

The first state penitentiary, authorized by the General Assembly (1827) and constructed in Alton (completed 1831) was managed by a warden overseen by four inspectors. A new penitentiary at Joliet was authorized (1857) and built by Alton convicts (completed 1860) who were transferred to the new prison while the Alton site became a Civil War military prison.
