Papers, 1972-1985.

Collection contains materials used in preparation for Mauskopf's book, The Elusive Science, co-authored with M.R. McVaugh. Included are audio cassettes, transcripts, and notes. Interviews are with J.B. and Louisa Rhine, B.F. Skinner, Gardner Murphy, J. Gaither Pratt, and other prominent psychologists. Five notebooks contain chiefly Mauskopf's notes on the council minutes of the Society for Psychical Research; and there is also a reel-to-reel tape of an interview with Mrs. K.M. Goldney.

Joseph Gaither Pratt was born in Winston-Salem, NC on August 31, 1910 to Joseph M. and Mattis H. Pratt. He completed his academic training at Duke University: A. B. in 1931, M. A. in 1933 and Ph.D. in 1936. He married his wife Nellie in 1936, and they had four children. Pratt joined the psychology department at Duke in 1937 as an instructor and a member of the staff of parapsychology where he served for nearly 30 years.
