The Ames Laboratory began as a chemical research and development program at Iowa State College (University) to assist the World War II Manhattan Project. The program developed an entirely new technology for the conversion of uranium ore to high-purity uranium metal and then used that technology to produce more than 2 million pounds by the end of the war. Chemistry professor. Charles V. Banks received his B.S. (1941) from Western Illinois University; and his M.S. (1944) and Ph. D. (1946) from Iowa State University. He joined the Iowa State staff in 1941 and became a Professor of Chemistry and Section Chief of the Chemistry Division, Ames Laboratory. He made outstanding contributions to analytical chemistry and in 1970, he was awarded the American Chemical Society Award in Analytical Chemistry. From the description of Papers, 1940-1970...
