Photostatic copies of documents penned by José Álvarez de Toledo as part of his efforts to come to a rapprochement with Spain in 1816. They include a petition for pardon in which he explains his reasons for his defection to the U.S. and his participation in revolutionary activities in Texas; a letter of advice to the King that urges him to take a conciliatory approach towards the Spanish colonies and advocates free trade, the cession of part of Santo Domingo to the French, and the strengthening of Spain's navy; a proposal for suppressing the revolution in the Kingdom of Mexico; and an elaborate statement of apology that attempts to justify his work on behalf of the revolution in Texas. Accompanying the photocopies is a reprint of an article by Harris Gaylord Warren from Louisiana historical quarterly that contains an English translation of the documents.

José Álvarez de Toledo was a politician, propagandist, and short-term commander of Texas forces in revolt against Spain. Born in Havana, Cuba, the son of a Spanish naval officer, Toledo was educated at the Escuela Naval de Cádiz in Spain and served in both the Spanish and British navies. He was elected to the Cortes at Cádiz as a representative from Santo Domingo but was exiled in 1811 due to his support of independence for the American colonies.
