The collection consists of letters both by and to members of three generations of the Griggs and Bragg families of Fayston, Vermont. The family is descended from Stephen Griggs (1784-1828) and Rhoda Smith (1786-1861), early settlers of Fayston. The earliest letters in the collection, written between 1848 and 1894, are those of Sally (1814-1903) and Susan (1816-1897) Griggs, daughters of Stephen and Rhoda Griggs. Sally's letters concern her life in Fayston whereas Susan's correspondence relates in large part to her teaching career in Indiana and Missouri, an opportunity arranged for her by the National Board of Popular Education under the leadership of Vermont's ex-Governor William Slade. The largest group of letters are those of Anna Bixby Griggs Bragg (1837-1887) and John Chandler Griggs Jr. (1851-1938), children of John Chandler Griggs (1807-1861) and Lydia Bixby (1812-1887). Anna describes her life as a farm wife in Fayston between 1865 and 1914 and John, his career as a small businessman in Waterbury, Barre, and Montpelier between 1892 and 1938.
