Unitarian Church of Montpelier (Church of the Messiah) records, 1835-1978.

The records in this collection cover roughly the first hundred years of the activities of the Church of the Messiah, later called the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, Vermont. This collection includes records of the construction of the building, pastoral activities, official business, and the activities of church organizations, especially women's groups. The collection also includes one record book from a predecessor organization, the First Universalist Church.

The Church of the Messiah was incorporated as an independent liberal religious body in Montpelier, Vermont, in December 1864. Its members claimed Universalist and Unitarian ties but chose a name with no denominational affiliation. The Independent Meeting House Society was then incorporated for the purpose of building and maintaining the church edifice, which was erected at the corner of Main and School streets in 1865.
