Regiment; honors bestowed on officers; obituary notices of Army and Navy officers; the capture of Norfolk, Va.; handwritten account of the progression of the war, 1862 Jan. 1-1862 Aug. 30 (at end of vol.); also includes items relating to Capt. Charles Robinson Johnson.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
