This collection contains the papers, 1825-1941, of several members of the Pegram, Johnson, and McIntosh families of Virginia and South Carolina. Primary correspondents in the collection include William Ransom Johnson Pegram (1841-1865) while a student at the University of Virginia, and as a member of Purcell's Virginia Artillery Battalion, C.S.A.; David Gregg McIntosh (1836-1916) while a student at the University of South Carolina, a member of the Pee Dee South Carolina Light Artillery Battalion, C.S.A., and as an attorney; and, William Ransom Johnson (1782-1849) concerning horses and horse-racing. Other correspondents include John Pegram (1832-1865), James West Pegram (1839-1881), Mary Evans (Pegram) Anderson (1830-1911), Virginia Johnson (Pegram) McIntosh (1843-1920), and Hetty (Cary) Pegram Martin (1836-1892).
