Possibly written in 1835, this letter from Ben Hardin is to a Mr. and Mrs. Chinn of Harrodsburg. Writing about the impending marriage of his son, James, to their daughter, Jane, Hardin proposes that the two sets of parents meet to discuss setting the couple up in housekeeping so as to insure the success of the union. Much of the letter pertains to Hardin's schedule of trips around the state and back and forth to Washington D.C.

Benjamin Hardin, Jr., was considered one of the foremost Kentucky trial lawyers of his day. Hardin also served four years each in the State House and Senate for Kentucky, and five terms in the United States Congress as a State Representative during the period from 1815 to 1837. He served as Secretary of State in Kentucky from 1844-1847, but was removed from office by Governor William Owsley in a policy dispute over patronage appointments.
