Joel Roberts Poinsett papers, 1787-1851.

Papers contain records (1787-1809) of the Edisto and Ashley Canal Company (established in 1787 in Charleston, S.C. for the purpose of cleaning and making navigable the Edisto River and for "opening a communication between Edisto and Ashley Rivers, by a canal and locks"). These records include minutes of meetings, a broadside, accounts of subscribers and stockholders, a list of subscribers, and letters to Peter Freneau and others regarding the formation of the company. Papers include letters (1819-1821) to Poinsett in his capacity as President of the South Carolina Board of Public Works concerning repairs of public buildings, including jails and the "College in Columbia" (28 Sept. 1820), river navigation, canals, waterproof cement, and other matters, miscellaneous public works papers including a petition, receipts, plats, and other items, a letter (24 April 1849) from Poinsett to his step-granddaughter Mary Pringle (des Francs) regarding some drawings and personal matters, and hand and typewritten lists of the books in Poinsett's library.
