Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, school papers, and other items. Correspondence (1794-1862) is mostly among Middleton family members concerning family and social matters, travels, and other topics. Correspondents include Oliver Hering Middleton, Sr., Susan Chisolm Middleton, John Izard Middleton, Mary Julia Middleton (later Mary Read), Oliver Hering Middleton, Jr., Dr. Robert Trail Chisolm (d. 1821), Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert T.) Chisolm, Henry Middleton, and others. Letters are from Charleston (S.C.), Philadelphia (Pa.), Newport (R.I.), New York (N.Y.), Rome (Italy), London (England) and elsewhere. School papers include essays, lecture notes, and a geometry exercise of Oliver Hering Middleton, Jr., and two notebooks (1843-1846) of Mary Julia Middleton (later Mary Read) mostly concerning history and characters of Greek mythology.

The son of South Carolina governor Henry Middleton (1770-1846), Oliver Hering Middleton was a plantation owner (Edisto Island) and U.S. Navy officer.
