John Edwards Holbrook papers, 1844-1871.

Papers primarily consist of Holbrook's letters from Boston (Mass.), Wrentham (Mass.), and elsewhere to his niece Harriott Horry Ravenel concerning family matters, books, travels, and his professional and scientific pursuits. Other items include an obituary and posthumous tribute to Holbrook (1871); a copy of a letter (1856) to Holbrook from the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries requesting him to propose American colleagues as new members; a handwritten fragment (ca. 1854) of the proceedings of the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries; Holbrook's certificate of membership (1849) in the Society; and a letter (1844) to Holbrook from Prince Maximilian, at Neuwied (Germany), concerning herpetology and Holbrook's book on the subject.
