Family documents series, 1771-ca. 1945.

Papers consist of estate and property records, school papers, a plantation journal, a scrapbook, scientific notes, genealogical material, and photographs. Estate records consist of wills of Thomas Porcher (1766-1835) and Charlotte Porcher, letters of administration, and letters testamentary naming Thomas Porcher (1796-1843) and Peter Cordes Porcher executors of the estate of Thomas Porcher (1766-1835). Property records include plats of John Ainslie's Berkeley County plantation; a conveyance (1852) of New Hope Plantation; abstracts of title, certificates, correspondence, and other items pertaining to Mexico Plantation and properties on South Bay Street and Broad Street in Charleston, S.C. Bound volumes (1783-1872) include geometry and trigonometry exercise books (1783) of Samuel Porcher; a handwriting copybook (1823) of Anna Maria Porcher (later Anna Stoney); a plantation journal (1822-1823) of Thomas Porcher (1766-1835) noting weather, cotton crop, and general farming conditions; a scrapbook (1872) memorializing Francis James Porcher; and a notebook (n.d) attributed to Julius Theodore Porcher containing notes on microscopic organisms and cells, with drawings of microscopic cross-sections of wood fibers, hairs, and other objects of study. Genealogical material (1870's-1940's) include notes on Hezekiah Maham and the Porcher, Dubose, Ward, and allied families. Photographs are of Francis Peyre Porcher, his family, and relations.

Francis Peyre Porcher was born in Charleston, South Carolina on December 14, 1824 to William and Isabella Sarah Peyre Porcher. Through his mother's side, he was a descendant of the botanist, Thomas Walter author of Flora Caroliniana. Porcher graduated from the South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1844 and from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1847.
