Papers consist of Ball family receipts (1730-1858) for clothing, medical services, and other expenditures; undated correspondence (ca. 1770-ca. 1795), mostly letters to John Ball (1760-1817) regarding family and plantation affairs; wills and estate papers; slave records; muniments and other legal documents; dated correspondence; oversized documents; and other items. Dated correspondence (1774-1849) of Ball family members and others at Comingtee Plantation, Limerick Plantation, and elsewhere includes letters of overseer James Coward, George Lockey (London agent for John Ball, Sr.), Elias Ball (1744-1822), and Isaac Ball (1754-1776), concerning politics, confiscated land, and family and plantation matters. Estate records include those of John Ball (1760-1817) and Ann Simons Ball (1776-1840). Oversized documents (1631-1842) of Ball family members and members of the Child, Simons, Harleston, and other related families include wills, indentures and other legal documents, land grants, plats, and accounts. Other items include a list of livestock at Jericho Plantation, a list of carpenter's tools at Comingtee Plantation, overseer agreements (1821), and lists of slaves (ca. 1812-1833).

Ann Simons was the daughter of Keating Simons (1753-1834) a Charleston, S.C. factor and South Carolina state Representative. She married Berkeley County, S.C. plantation owner John Ball (1782-1834) in 1814. Eleanor Simons (1765-1827) was Keating Simons' second wife; she was the step-mother of Ann Simons Ball.
