Papers consist mainly of correspondence of Daniel Huger Bacot, his wife Marie Thomas Bacot, and others, but also include manuscripts, clippings, and photographs of the Bacot family. Correspondence (1933-1973) concerns Daniel Huger Bacot's job searches, teaching jobs at Temple University, the University of Alabama, the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and elsewhere, his newspaper work for the Asheville Citizen, the News & Courier (Charleston, S.C.), the Greenville News, and other papers, family and social matters, and Marie Thomas Bacot's education and her teaching position at Ashley Hall school. Correspondence of Daniel Huger Bacot is principally with his professors at Harvard but also with friends, his mother Josephine Rhett Bacot, and other members of the Bacot family and relations. Manuscripts of Bacot's historical writings concern South Carolina and United States politics, Fort Moultrie, Civil War blockade running, and other subjects. Clippings from the Charleston News & Courier, including book reviews, concern Charleston architecture, the Carolina Yacht Club, colonial tobacco planters, early Charleston theater, race, and other matters.

Charleston, South Carolina writer. She was the granddaughter of Robert Barnwell Rhett (1800-1876), and her parents were Robert Barnwell Rhett II (1828-1905) and Josephine Horton. In 1888 she married Charleston (S.C.) merchant Daniel Huger Bacot (1847-1920). Their children included: Daniel Huger Bacot (b. 1888), Walter Rhett Bacot (b. 1899), and Barnwell Rhett Bacot (b. 1891). Charleston, South Carolina educator, journalist and writer. After receiving his doctorate from Harvard in 1922, he taught at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and at Temple University in Philadelphia (Pa.). Bacot was a proof reader, reviewer, and feature and editorial writer for The News and Courier (Charleston, S.C.) for 31 years.
